The Anakie Fires - January 2006

Anakie Fires January 2006

Oil on canvas on wooden board 57cm x 45cm

A drought, hot weather and high dry winds in January 2006 fanned the fires that razed Anakie in Victoria. At one stage the hot winds whipped the flames over a hill in the distance and we all got to see the full force of the fire heading towards us. You realise how much energy the fire has when you see the hills around you clearly, in it's light, when it is still so far away!

The photos we took didn't come out this well but the scene had to be recorded as a tribute to the CFA volunteer firefighters and the locals who lost the lot.
