Grassfire at Somerton

Grassfire at Somerton

Oil on canvas on wooden board 20cm x 48cm

Just north of Melbourne, where Sydney Road becomes the Hume Highway, is Somerton, now all factories. Before it was built, there were acres of low hills, covered in long grass that used to catch fire every couple of years.

The flames made a spectacular show at night, whipped up by the winds, with vibrant colours that no artist could resist.
